HOW TO MAKE YOUR BEDROOM COZIER FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Sweater weather is here and we couldn’t be happier. Similar to how you swap or rotate through a seasonal wardrobe, it’s a good idea to update your décor and bedding with the seasons too. To help you find the best ways to bring more warmth to your space, we sat down with Adam Stevenson, Malouf Visual Merchandiser Manager and resident interior design expert from HYGGE CAVE. He highlighted a few different ways to bring the coziness of the season straight to your bedroom.

Quick Ways to Add Coziness

Aromatherapy

Nothing says fall like lighting your favorite seasonal candle. Scent has an incredible pull on our mood and it’s one of the best ways to amp up the coziness in your room. If you’re not a candle person, don’t worry. “I love smart diffusers like Pura because they allow you to diffuse scents from the comfort of your own bed,” Stevenson said. “Being able to diffuse scents centered around your schedule sets the scene for a cozy space.” Pura is just one type of diffuser you can use, but you can opt for a traditional candle or an essential oil diffuser too—whatever you prefer.

Seasonal Sheets
Replacing cooler bed linens with soft, cozy sheets will make all the difference too. It’s an easy swap to make and extra sheets are easy to store away until you need them. For chilly winter nights,Adam’s go-to sheets are the Brushed Microfiber Sheet Set. “They’re amazing,” Stevenson told us, “They add just the right amount of warmth and they’re extremely affordable.”

Where to Splurge

Bedding

When it comes to blankets and comforters, quality bedding will pay off night after night. And there’s nothing better than wrapping yourself in pure comfort. “I absolutely love Malouf’s Down Blend Comforter,” Adam explained, “It comes in an oversized option, giving you that fuller, plush look you see in magazines and showrooms.” Plus, if you share the bed, oversized dimensions mean you don’t have to worry about stealing your partner’s side of covers anymore—there’s plenty of comforter to go around.

Area Rugs

Selecting the right rug can act as a grounding force for the décor in your room. It also adds extra insulation in colder weather, keeping cool air from seeping up through the floor. To layer a rug in your bedroom, go big—at least an 8 x 10 size or larger. “It’ll have more of an impact in your space,” Stevenson recommended, “Ideally, it should be large enough to fit your entire bed.” If a large rug isn’t in the budget, try adding a pair of runners on either side of the bed so your feet don’t hit the cold floor first thing in the morning.

What to Avoid

Too Many Pillows

The more pillows you put on your bed, the more cluttered your space can look. Excess doesn’t equal warm and cozy. In the case of pillows, it’s a delicate balance. Stevenson typically recommends four to six pillows on a Queen or King size bed. “Anything more and you take away from natural focal points in your room,” He said, “I like to keep things simple and favor fluffier duvets and comforters instead of pillows to add that cozy, cloud-like look.”

Incorrectly Sized Furniture

Placing a bed that is too large or too small in a room can detract from the ambiance of your space—no matter how beautiful the furniture is. “As a general rule, you should have at least 30 inches of clear space on each side of the bed,” Stevenson advised. To find the best fit, he suggests playing around with the furniture layout in your room. And before you buy a new piece of furniture, always make sure it fits your space and not just your style.

Transition Pieces

Accent Lighting

With winter comes less sunlight. To keep your space feeling warm and bright all year long, add accent lighting like floor and table lamps. While skies may be gloomy outside, multiple light sources give your bedroom a warm, golden glow no matter the season. Stevenson’s pro tip: install a dimmer switch to allow for moodier lighting.

Houseplants

“What’s more festive than a poinsettia?” Stevenson said, “Indoor plants can add extra cheer and dimension to your space.” And upgrading the pot is a good opportunity to play with texture and color. Just make sure you place your potted plant next to a window or look into plants that can tolerate low light if natural lighting is a concern. It’s also easy to swap out a regular bulb for a grow light to help your plants thrive all season long. And if you’re already considering adding accent lighting, it’s a win-win.

Neutral Focal Points

With the right base piece, you can get away with changing only a few elements from season to season. Stevenson recommends choosing larger pieces designed to act as a staple in your design and then adding small, seasonal accents as needed. A perfect example: The Blackwell Designer Bed. The clean lines and vertical channels create a focal point in your room that will complement a variety of accent pieces and decor. Plus, it comes in five neutral colors, including a warm desert brown and festive spruce green.
