A Reno-Free Kitchen Makeover Transformed This 1920s Mediterranean Revival Into a Family-Friendly Oasis

When a young family traded the sunny streets of Los Angeles for the leafy charm of Massachusetts, they found themselves at a crossroad familiar to many homeowners. They adored their century-old Mediterranean Revival home, but its formal, traditional layout wasn’t quite suited to the demands of daily family life with two toddlers. Instead of embarking on a full renovation, they chose to embrace the home’s original character while adapting it for modern living, enlisting designer Meghan Shadrick to bring this vision to life.

The house spans an impressive 4,700 square feet and retains all the architectural flourishes you’d expect from a well-preserved 1920s gem—arched doorways, a grand center hall, and rooms built for formal entertaining. Yet for this young family, the space needed to feel less like a museum and more like a sanctuary, one that could comfortably accommodate the joyful chaos of everyday moments.

Blending Historic Charm with Everyday Comfort

The biggest challenge in this project was making the home's formal floor plan feel warm and inviting for daily family use. “The traditional layout was beautiful but didn’t match how the family wanted to live,” Shadrick explains. Instead of tearing down walls or starting from scratch, the design team sought to gently refresh and reimagine the space, marrying the home’s vintage appeal with a welcoming, practical atmosphere.

One of the most striking examples of this approach is the kitchen. Rather than gutting the space, the existing cabinetry was kept intact and reconfigured to introduce a freestanding island. This subtle change opened up the room, creating a natural hub for family gathering without compromising the home’s original essence. A cozy breakfast nook with a custom banquette was added, infusing the kitchen with a casual, inviting feel perfect for morning meals or homework sessions.

Restoring and Reinventing Key Living Spaces

Throughout the home, original details received careful attention. In the family room, for example, Shadrick and her team restored the millwork to its former glory through sanding, bleaching, and refinishing, preserving the wood’s warmth and character. The space was outfitted with comfortable furniture and durable fabrics, designed to withstand the wear and tear of active family life while providing a cozy retreat for movie nights and playtime.

The formal living room was softened with textured plaster walls that add depth and warmth. Multiple seating areas encourage conversation and connection, while a centrally placed round table doubles as a spot for casual dining or creative projects. These thoughtful touches transform what could have felt stiff and distant into a genuinely inviting environment.

The expansive entryway, the heart of the home’s circulation, features wallpaper inspired by New England’s natural landscapes. This subtle nod to the region’s outdoors brings an organic freshness to the space, setting an inviting tone upon arrival. It also connects seamlessly to other key areas like the office and formal living room, reinforcing the home’s open flow.
