Inside Elisa Lipsky-Karasz’s Stylish and Functional Hearst Tower Office Makeover

Inside Elisa Lipsky-Karasz’s Stylish and Functional Hearst Tower Office Makeover

Design Insight

Elisa Lipsky-Karasz’s office makeover demonstrates how thoughtful layering of iconic furniture and vibrant accents can transform a compact workspace into a dynamic environment that fosters creativity and collaboration. By mixing timeless design pieces with personal touches, the space balances functionality with aesthetic appeal, encouraging an open flow of ideas and interaction.

Office Makeover: Inside Elisa Lipsky-Karasz’s Creative Workspace

Perched high in New York City’s iconic Hearst Tower, designed by Norman Foster and offering sweeping views of Central Park, Elisa Lipsky-Karasz’s office is a testament to thoughtful design and intentional creativity. When the ELLE Decor head of editorial content first moved into her bright workspace, it was outfitted with generic built-ins and standard office furniture that didn’t quite match the vibrancy of her role or the inspiring skyline outside. With a vision to transform this space into a personal, functional sanctuary that fuels collaboration and creativity, the ELLE Decor team, in partnership with Lumens and select design brands, reimagined the office into a dynamic environment that perfectly suits Elisa’s daily workflow and aesthetic sensibility.

Maximizing Space with Purpose and Personality

The challenge was clear: how to make the most of a modest footprint without sacrificing character or functionality. The answer lies in a careful balance between comfort, utility, and style. By the window, a Ligne Roset G10 chair invites moments of quiet reflection or phone calls, offering a cozy perch with a view of the park’s greenery. The Branch desk anchors the workspace, providing ample surface area for meetings, editing sessions, and creative bursts without becoming cluttered. At the heart of the room, a circular Four Hands table serves as a gathering point, perfect for spreading out magazine layouts or engaging in team discussions.

Flexibility defines the layout. Instead of rigidly assigning each corner a fixed role, Elisa’s office encourages movement and adaptability. Whether it’s a quick brainstorming session or a more formal meeting, the space flows effortlessly to accommodate the needs of the moment.

The Art of Seating: An Eclectic Mix of Iconic Chairs

In Elisa’s office, chairs do far more than provide a place to sit—they shape the atmosphere and spark conversation. Rejecting the predictability of matching sets, the space features a curated collection of standout designs that reflect both personality and history. Frank Gehry’s sculptural Wiggle chair contrasts beautifully with Jean Prouvé’s classic Standard chair, while a violet Kartell Colonna stool from DWR adds a playful pop of color. An ergonomic office chair from Audo Copenhagen rounds out the mix, blending comfort with style.

This eclectic approach to seating is more than aesthetic—it’s a nod to the creative spirit that defines Elisa’s leadership. She recalls the office of Dennis Freedman, former creative director at W magazine, where every chair was a unique design statement. Iconic pieces like the Wiggle chair are timeless yet approachable, able to sit comfortably within diverse interiors without overwhelming the space. Dana Gers of Lumens describes these chairs as “distinct but never overwhelming,” highlighting how such thoughtful design transcends trends to become enduring classics.

Color, Art, and Atmosphere

Elisa’s office is punctuated with vibrant touches that elevate the mood and add depth to the design. The foundation is set by a rich green Climbing Vine rug from Nordic Knots, which grounds the space and allows for a rotating cast of art, books, and decorative objects to come and go with ease. Among the most personal accents is a framed piece by artist Do Ho Suh, which Elisa displays proudly on the wall. The artwork’s subtle color palette harmonizes with the room’s décor, tying together the various elements into a cohesive visual story.

Lighting and accessories further enhance the office’s welcoming vibe. A Gubi lamp provides focused illumination, complemented by a sleek Flos Bellhop lamp and a Ginori 1735 tray that balances beauty with function. A Raawaii clock helps keep time in check without feeling intrusive, while a Bang & Olufsen Beosound A5 speaker adds the perfect soundtrack to inspire creativity throughout the day. Every detail reflects a balance of practicality and style, ensuring the space feels alive and responsive to Elisa’s needs.

Creating a Space for Collaboration and Inspiration

For Elisa Lipsky-Karasz, the ideal workspace is more than just a place to work—it’s a hub where ideas are exchanged, creativity is nurtured, and collaboration thrives. She prefers to keep her office door open, inviting colleagues to drop by for spontaneous conversations or to gather around the table for brainstorming sessions. The eclectic seating encourages a relaxed, informal atmosphere where everyone settles in comfortably, sharing pages of layouts and countless cups of coffee or lemon tea.

The desk itself remains intentionally uncluttered, sized just right for a laptop and notebook without becoming a repository for piles of paper or magazines. This restraint keeps the focus on what matters most: the creative process. The office reflects Elisa’s collaborative leadership style, fostering an environment where inspiration flows freely and decisions are made with clarity and confidence. It’s a reminder that even a small workspace can achieve big things when designed with intention and heart.
